Dear Retailers: Please Stop Changing Black Friday
I'm a Black Friday shopper. Yes, I'm one of those people.
Yet I have never pushed anyone to get an item. I have never cussed anyone out. And I have never sent my husband to elbow other husbands out of the way to get to the Power Wheels.
(Word to the wise, if you are a 5'3" female, don't even try to get to the big toys. It's scary in there.)
I even make a special effort to be nice to everyone. Last year, I let a lady in front of me in line. She looked at me like I was from Mars. I try to say, "Merry Christmas" to everyone I see, and if I don't get an item, oh well.
I shop on Black Friday for the fun of it. It is good bonding time for the women in my family, and we enjoy the hustle and bustle. We go eat at Waffle House together (somewhere I never step foot in any other day of the year), and we usually hit the point of delirium around 3 am.
This was us after surviving Black Friday at WalMart a couple of years ago.
Every year retailers bump up the sale times earlier and earlier. To what purpose, I wonder. Profit, of course, but do they really make that much more at 8 pm Thanksgiving night than at 12 am Friday morning?
I would gladly allow employees their time to spend with their family and rest up. I really don't mind. We crazy Black Friday shoppers are going to be there, coffee in hand a strategy plotted. But you can make us wait!
Dear Retailers, please stop changing Black Friday. If the trend continues, by next year, we'll be shopping at 10 am on Thanksgiving Day. That's just silliness. Can we make it a rule that Black Friday sales can only start on, oh, you know, Black Friday?
Do I really think that writing this will make any difference? No, but that's never stopped me from giving my opinion before. It's important to remember theat everyone has an opinion, and mine may not always line up with yours. But we can still be kind to one another.
Be kind to one another this year, and Happy Thanksgiving!
